14TH DECEMBER 2025 – RACE REPORT BY RACHEL HOWARD
A dry and bright morning for the final race in the steel city 10 series. I was jogging up & down Redmires Rd trying to keep warm rather than warming up. While Amy stayed snuggled up in her car until the last moment before braving the elements in her trademark shorts and vest. A quick hug and a selfie, 3,2,1 and we were off.
A short half lap of a field, over a wooden bridge, down a track into the woods, left to stick to the side of Rivelin dams, which was all a steady incline. Still ascending onto open moorland, where one unfortunate runner lost his car key! Dropped down to Redmires reservoir and a strong head wind, finally snaking around the woods before popping out onto a sports field and the finish. One of the more challenging routes in the series and with the recent rain it was very boggy in parts.
I finished in 60:12 mins and Amy in 64:26 mins. The series prize giving was held after the race which gave us time for a brew and catch up. I knew I was in 4th position in the series but I didn’t know the actual scores or if there was any chance of catching the others, as it turned out I did catch up and took 3rd place for the series. Probably more due to others not completing the 4 races to complete the series and me being a consistent 4/5 place finisher than being the 3rd fastest*. All profits from the races go to the local groups that help maintain the park that is used for that race. So, join in and help support local green projects, dates for next years races are on the Facebook site.
*Note from the editor – this is untrue; Rach earned 3rd place because she was the 3rd fastest over the series, not because of any other nonsense she is attributing things to. So nerrrrr.
